Xiaomi Redmi Note 4 – A Power-Packed Phone At Just $259

The Xiaomi Redmi Note 3 has already got quite a good following and reviews, so the launch of the Redmi Note 4 earlier this year sets expectations high. Is the phone worth your money at just $259? Read on to find out.

At 8.3mm, the Xiaomi Redmi Note 4 is slimmer than its predecessor, and just one gramme heavier at 165g. In fact, the Redmi Note 4 follows the Redmi Note 3 quite closely with regards to its design. The front panel of the Redmi Note 4 is very similar to that of the Note 3, and the all-metal phone does feel pretty sturdy, giving no hint that it comes at such an affordable price tag.

Most users report having no problem using the handset with just one hand. The rounded edges of the phone actually fits well in the palm, although some reported it being rather slippery and even has a tendency to slide off uneven soft surfaces.

The rear design of the Redmi Note 4 is a bit different though. Unlike many phones which come with a home screen button at the bottom of the phone, the Redmi Note 4 has a fingerprint scanner on the back of the phone. The accuracy of the scanner is also placed under scrutiny as it can be an awkward position for users to place their finger accurately enough to register it properly.

On the whole, the Note 4 comes with a very respectable build quality and definitely does not feel like a budget device.

The Redmi Note 4 runs on XIaomi’s MIUI 8 based on Android 6.0.1 Marshmallow. Xiaomi has added plenty of new features including Now on Tap. Which can be triggered within any app just by holding the Home button, and can use what’s on screen as context for your searches.

Xiaomi has made the decision to remove the app drawer, which is a key feature that sets Android phones apart from iOS. This means that every app that you install will show up on your home screen. Some people might like this arrangement, but it may also mean you need more time to search for apps, particularly if you like to download loads od them.

The Quick Ball feature is a nifty function – a hovering button that stays on the screen at all times that allows for various functionalities, such as taking screenshots when you are within an app. It also lets users define up to five shortcuts for easy access. The one-handed mode was also a helpful feature, which basically shrinks the display to one side of the screen and lets users select effective screen sizes of 3.5, 4, and 4.5 inches.

In this day and age where consumers store all sorts of data on their phone, we like how Xiaomi has it in mind to help users retain their privacy. The Redmi Note 4 offers Dual Apps and Second Space, allowing users to create two instances of any app on the same smartphone, so you can, for example, use two WhatsApp accounts at the same time. Second Space works like a second hard drive on your PC that lets users separate business and personal data on the same phone.

And supporting all that awesome-ness in this phone is its amazing battery life. The massive 4,100mAh battery and the power efficient processor allow users to have about 1.5 days of battery even when using it fully.

Xiaomi has focused its efforts on improving camera quality on the Redmi Note 4 after complaints about camera quality on its previous model. Some users might spot a curious change in the phone – dropping the megapixel count from 16MP to 13 MP, but might soon realise that the bigger pixel size allows for better low light photos, which so many smartphone cameras struggle with.

While the phone takes decent pictures in daylight, shots turn out rather unimpressive in low-light conditions. You also need to shoot in HDR, but it does take longer to shoot images, plus you’ll need to keep extremely still. More often than not, HDR mode ends up producing blurry shots, which really defeats the purpose of the function.

Should you buy it?

A definitely yes from us, given its very attractive price point, overall functionality and not to mention that its predecessor has gotten huge success, selling over millions of units in India.
